… because I took a temp assignment at a nice mid-sized law firm. But never mind about that.
What do you think of my auto decor for Autumn?
I’m a little worried about spontaneous combustion.
The car sits in the sun in the BART lot all day, and it’s been hot again. I’ve even driven from El Cerrito Plaza up to Del Norte, so it can be in a BART garage.

That’s one fine thing about office work: air conditioning. We have moved from some somewhat unseasonable heat (the SF Bay Area is known for its cool summers) into our official Indian Summer, which can be a little sweltering. And while a cool place to spend the day is nice, I haven’t written word one for six weeks. And I was kinda gettin’ into it.
The first four weeks, just plain exhaustion. And we’re losing the light. I tell myself to crawl into the back seat with the head lamp and scribble a few pages. But, no. I eat my McDonalds. I watch some YouTube. I play some phone games. And it’s time for bed. Won’t that look well on the tombstone.
However, the exhaustion is lifting. I signed up for some volunteer stints with the East Bay Heritage Quilters. Last weekend was the Pacific International Quilt Show, in San Mateo. The Heritage Quilters sign up for a table, for which they have to pay, but they pay less if they can sign up members for volunteer shifts during the show.
So, for two hours, from 3:00 to 5:00, I was provided with white gloves and assigned an aisle to patrol. Signs every six feet: Do Not Touch the Quilts. Ask the nice lady with the white gloves and she will accommodate inspection. I was a member of the Quilt Police. It was fun. The citizens are really quite well behaved. Of course, any citizen who goes to a quilt show would be. Only one violation did I observe on my watch, and that was committed by a six-year-old.
And don’t think I didn’t wallow a bit in that sea of “my people.” Middle-aged white ladies, as far as the eye can see. I saw Amish … or Mennonites. Do Mennonites wear the little white gauzy caps on their hair? I don’t think the Amish are supposed to get on a plane without a really good reason.
And, also, of course, I spent money. I got the cutest … hold on … I’m going to take a picture. These are packages of Christmas print cotton circles, of a three inch diameter, and out of these you make what are called in the quilting world, Yo-Yo’s. Now I have to make a yo-yo, and take a picture of that. Hold on …

Isn’t it just the cutest thing?
So you make fifty of these little beggars and stick them to a three inch diameter styrofoam ball, overlapping like leaves, attach a ribbon and hang this pet proof ornament from your tree.

It will be a while before you see a photo of that. But this law firm assignment ends at the end of the week: another reason why I’m suddenly so perky.

One response to “I’ve Been Off”
Excited to see a quilting yoyo, I have held off on googling it so it will be a surprise! The quilt fair certainly sounds like a unique event and I’m glad the people could keep their hands off the quilts!
